Aboriginal Land Rights (NT) Act 1976

a federal Act, proclaimed in 1977, giving recognition to Aboriginal land rights in the NT.
This Act was an important step in the recognition of Aboriginal land rights. It provided for Aboriginal land trusts to hold title to Aboriginal land and for the investigation of Aboriginal claims to unalienated Crown land. One of the best known claims under the Act was that of the Gurindji people in 1981, following on from the 1966 strike by Aboriginal pastoral workers on Wave Hill station in the NT. The claim was eventually successful and in 1986 ownership of the land was transferred.
